This should end well: USA building super computer to manage decaying nukes
Feb 3rd, 2009No Comments
Does the Pentagon not watch movies?
Would you like to play a game?
The main purpose of the massive super computer will be to run nuclear simulations to determine the safety of America’s decaying thermonuclear war machine.
The problem we have with the nuclear stockpile is similar to one you might have at home with a car you’ve kept in the garage for 20 to 30 years. How do you carefully maintain the car as it ages so that when you go to start the car, you can be very confident it will start? That the probability that it won’t start is less than 1 in a million? That’s a pretty high level of certitude – Mark Seager, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory
And you need lots of horsepower for that, apparently: 20,000 trillion calculations per second. The equivalent of about 2 million desktop computers. It would reportedly take 20 times as many people on the earth using calculators for 50 straight years to process what the “Sequoia” computer could crunch in a single day.
But just wait until the damned thing becomes self-aware. Sarah Connor, where are you?
