New Scientist reports the Obama Administration has pumped more cash into science and technology than at any other time in history — including the Apollo space program and the Manhattan nuclear bomb project.
US$50B alone is going into renewable power and energy efficiency. Obama was likely thrown into the dark during the Great Blackout of 2006 and knows the electrical grid hasn’t received an upgrade in design in 100 years. The “string a wire when you need it” approach has created a massive chain of weak links, links that broke down three years ago.
During Obama’s inauguration speech, he took a clear swipe at The Luddite Bush and his religion-fueled anti-science ways:
We will restore science to its rightful place…
- U.S. President Barack Obama, January 20th, 2009
While scientists will benefit the most from this, the editorial points out they’ll also get the blame if they misspend or underdeliver.
